50 in dog years
Wienerschnitzel turns 50
— We’ve entered the dog days of summer, and the folks at Wienerschnitzel truly made Sunday a dog day: Celebrating its 50th birthday, there were tons of games, festivities and 61 cent hot dogs — in honor of 1961, when it all began.
Wienerschnitzel is the world’s largest hot dog chain, but it started with one location in California 50 years ago.
To honor its success, organizers hosted competitions at several area locations, including the original A-frame architecture building at 3555 South Padre Island Drive, the store with the highest sales in the country.
Franchise owners Dennis Courtney, Bill Richmond and Albert Juarez hosted a hot dog eating competition Sunday. Other events were a best dressed wiener dog competition and a tug-o-war over a sticky, but delicious, pool of chili.
