Better Business Bureau warns of red-light camera scam
— If someone claiming to be from the Texas Department of Public Safety calls demanding immediate payment on a red-light safety camera ticket, don’t take the bait.
It’s a scam, the Better Business Bureau warns.
DPS doesn’t collect fines or oversee red-light cameras, according to a bureau news release.
The most recent incident occurred in Cleveland in East Texas, where residents told police that callers posing as DPS representatives asked them for credit card information and Social Security numbers to pay overdue tickets.
The bureau recommends ways to handle such calls:
Demand proof by asking for a telephone number for contacting someone directly about the call.
Always avoid providing personal information — bank account numbers, credit card information or Social Security numbers, for example — over the phone until confirming whether the call is legitimate.
Report any suspicious activity through a complaint to the bureau.
If the caller becomes abusive or threatening, complaints can also be entered through the Texas Attorney General’s Office, the release states.
