Little slice of France coming to Newburgh
NEWBURGH — Fans of dining out can now add French cuisine to their diets.
Ze Bistro, a Newburgh restaurant offering soups, salads, hot and cold sandwiches and desserts, all made from French recipes known and tweaked by the business’ owner Philippe Fabri, opens Monday.
The eatery is located in Bell Crossing on Bell Road, behind Bell Oaks Shopping Center.
Fabri has been in the Evansville area the past seven months, hoping to start a restaurant. He formerly was employed at Le Poisson Lune, a fine-dining fish restaurant in Bordeaux France, and at Pizza Top in Toulouse, France.
Gary Roy, a longtime restaurant worker who first met Fabri five years ago, is the Ze Bistro manager.
He assisted Fabri in his search for a location.
Fabri is featuring such dishes as French onion and French tomato soups; Salad Nicoise, a specialty of South France made with rice, tomatoes, black olives, egg, tuna and onion; and Salad Strasbourgeoise, from East France, made with potatoes, pickles, green olives, frankfurters, mayonnaise and mustard sauce.
The hot sandwiches include Croque Monsieur, open-faced with ham, Swiss cheese on toasted bread topped with Bechamel sauce.
Desserts include riz au lait, a traditional rice pudding, and Chausson-aux-pommes, a flaky pastry filled with apples known as apple slippers, similar to an apple turnover.
The restaurant’s french fries are made from freshly cut potatoes, and the potato chips also are homemade.
The salad prices vary from $2.95 to $4.95 or more; the soups, from $2.99 to $5.99; and the sandwiches, from $4.95 to $6.95.
The desserts are $3.96 each.
All orders can be eaten inside the restaurant, which seats around 60, or can be ordered through drive-through service.
Roy said finding a location with a drive-through was among Fabri’s chief priorities.
The Newburgh location previously was occupied by a Philippine market. Earlier, it housed a TCBY ice cream/yogurt shop.
Ze Bistro’s hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The restaurant is closed on Sunday.
